EGCG Catechin Antioxidants

EGCG is the catechin most associated with green tea and the compound most heavily promoted in supplement marketing. The gap between laboratory findings and what a cup of tea does is wide.

What catechins are

Catechins are flavonoids present in tea leaves. Green tea retains more of them than black tea, because black tea processing oxidises catechins into theaflavins and thearubigins — which is why the two teas differ in colour and character.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant catechin in green tea and the one most studied.

What the evidence supports

In laboratory and animal work, EGCG shows antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other activity across many models. That body of work is real and it is what generates the headlines.

Translating it to people drinking tea is where it becomes difficult:

  • Bioavailability is low. Only a small fraction of ingested EGCG reaches circulation intact; much is metabolised in the gut and liver into other compounds.
  • Doses differ enormously. Studies frequently use concentrations far above what a cup delivers.
  • Human trials are inconsistent. Results for weight, metabolic markers and cardiovascular endpoints vary considerably in quality and outcome.

Habitual green tea drinking is associated with favourable outcomes in observational research. Those associations are worth noting and are not the same as demonstrating that EGCG caused them.

How much is in a cup

Roughly 50-100 mg of EGCG per cup of brewed green tea, varying widely with leaf quality, quantity, water temperature and steeping time. Matcha delivers more, because you consume the whole leaf rather than an infusion of it.

Supplement doses commonly reach several hundred milligrams in a single capsule.

Why that difference matters for safety

Concentrated green tea extract has been associated with rare cases of liver injury, and EFSA has flagged doses of 800 mg EGCG or more per day from supplements as a safety concern. The same signal does not appear for brewed tea drunk normally.

This is the practical conclusion of the whole subject: the beverage is well tolerated, the concentrate is a different product requiring a different conversation.

Brewing, briefly

Hotter water and longer steeping extract more catechins — and more bitterness, since catechins are astringent. There is a genuine trade-off between maximising extraction and producing something you enjoy drinking. Enjoyment should generally win, because a tea you like is a tea you will actually drink.

Drink green tea because it is good. Any compound-level benefit is a bonus, not the reason.

Is the evidence on egcg catechin antioxidants conclusive?

Rarely. Most beverage research either studies an isolated compound at a dose well above what a cup delivers, or observes populations where the drink is entangled with lifestyle. The honest summary is usually a plausible, partially evidenced mechanism rather than an established clinical effect.

What matters more than which drink I choose?

Serving size, concentration, preparation method, total daily intake and timing. Café portions are frequently several times a nominal cup, and that single factor often explains more variation than beverage type does.
