About CupCura
Who writes this, how the assessments are built, and where the numbers come from.
Last updated 22 August 2026
CupCura is an independent editorial reference for coffee, tea, and botanical beverages. It currently covers 346 individual beverages across 115 guide pages spanning origins, equipment, health context, and pairing.
What we are trying to do
Most beverage writing sits at one of two extremes: marketing copy that calls everything exceptional, or academic literature that never reaches the person holding the kettle. CupCura aims at the space between — specific enough to be useful at the bench, honest enough to say when a difference is marginal.
How a beverage page is built
Each of the 346 beverage entries carries the same structure, so pages can be compared rather than merely read:
- Origin and cultural context — where it comes from and how it is traditionally prepared, written without turning heritage into a marketing claim.
- Flavor radar — five axes (sweetness, acidity, bitterness, body, aroma) scored 0–100. These are comparative positions within our own catalog, not absolute measurements.
- Caffeine context — a typical milligram figure for a stated serving size, with the explicit caveat that real-world values vary widely.
- Preparation parameters — water temperature, dose ratio in grams per litre, extraction time, and grind or leaf format.
- Safety notes — contraindications and interactions, stated cautiously.
Where the numbers come from
Flavor values are editorial judgements, calibrated so that entries within a category sit in sensible relation to one another. They are not laboratory analyses, and we do not present them as such.
Caffeine figures are typical ranges drawn from published beverage-composition literature for the relevant plant, processing method, and serving size. Because caffeine varies with cultivar, harvest, roast, grind, temperature, and time, we treat these as comparative rather than exact.
Health content is framed conservatively. We describe mechanisms that have been studied, and we say when evidence is preliminary. We do not claim that a beverage treats, prevents, or cures anything. Every health page carries the disclaimer in our Terms of Service.
Corrections
We would rather be corrected than be wrong. If a cultivar attribution, a regional detail, a caffeine range, or a safety note is inaccurate, email info@cupcura.com with the specifics and we will investigate and amend the page.
Photography and image sourcing
Photography is drawn from Wikimedia Commons, Openverse, and comparable openly licensed sources. Each image displays its source and licence beneath it.
We hold ourselves to an honest standard here: images are selected to be category-accurate and visually representative, but for rare cultivars and specific regional preparations we cannot always source a photograph verified at varietal level. Where an image represents the category rather than the exact cultivar, that is a limitation of open-licence availability, and we would rather state it than imply a precision we do not have.
Commercial model
CupCura is funded two ways: affiliate commission on some equipment recommendations, under the rules set out in our Affiliate Disclosure, and Google AdSense advertising. It sells no data and operates no mailing list. Neither funding source has any influence over editorial content — see the Privacy Policy for exactly what advertising collects and how consent governs it.
