Editorial Policy

How pages are researched, how health content is handled, how the site is funded, and what happens when we get something wrong.

This page describes the rules CupCura applies to its own writing. It is meant to be checked against the pages themselves: if a page breaks a rule below, tell us (see Corrections below).

Who writes CupCura

Pages are credited to the CupCura editorial team as a whole. We do not print an author name, a title such as "Dr.", or any credential that we cannot stand behind, and we have removed bylines of that kind before.

Every article and guide shows a byline and a Published and an Reviewed date directly under its title. Beverage pages follow the same rules without a byline.

How pages are researched

  • Two independent sources where they exist. We aim for two independent sources for each factual claim; where we have only one, the page says so or hedges the claim.
  • Primary sources first. A producer, a standards body, a government food-composition database or a peer-reviewed paper outranks a website that repeats them.
  • Disagreement is shown, not hidden. When sources differ, the page gives a range or says the figure is disputed, rather than choosing the most convenient number.
  • Judgements are labelled as judgements. The flavor radar and the taste descriptions are editorial positions within our own catalog, not laboratory measurements, and the About page says so.
  • Links and citations are opened before they are added. A cited DOI or address has to resolve and has to say what we say it does.

Health content

Health pages are general information about food and drink. They are not medical advice and they do not replace a pharmacist, physician or registered dietitian.

  • Sources come from bodies such as the US National Institutes of Health, the European Food Safety Authority and studies indexed in PubMed, and we say when the evidence is preliminary or comes from animals or small trials.
  • We do not claim that a beverage treats, prevents or cures a disease or a condition, and we do not recommend a drink as a substitute for treatment.
  • Health pages carry no affiliate links and no product recommendations.
  • No page on this site has been reviewed by a clinician. Health guides say so under the title. We will not state that a page was medically reviewed unless a named, qualified person has done it and the page says who.

The full disclaimer is in the Terms of Service.

Affiliate links and advertising

Some gear, drink and guide pages link to retailers, and CupCura may earn a commission if you buy after following one, at no extra cost to you. The site also shows Google AdSense advertising.

  • Commission does not decide what is recommended, how products are ranked or what is written about them. A product is not praised because it pays, and a drawback is not left out because it would cost a sale.
  • There are no sponsored posts and no paid reviews, and editorial position is not for sale.
  • Affiliate links carry rel="sponsored" and every page footer carries the affiliate disclosure. The full rules are in the Affiliate Disclosure, and what advertising collects is in the Privacy Policy.

Use of AI tools

Drafts may be prepared with the help of AI tools. Facts are checked against sources as described above, and the site owner is responsible for everything we publish. Because such tools can state wrong things with confidence, a correction request is handled the same way whoever or whatever wrote the sentence.

Corrections

We would rather be corrected than be wrong. If a cultivar attribution, a regional detail, a caffeine range, a safety note or a cited source is inaccurate, email info@cupcura.com with the page address and what should change. A source helps but is not required.

We aim to reply within a few working days. A confirmed error is fixed on the page; where the error could affect someone's safety, such as a caffeine figure or a contraindication, we correct it first and as plainly as we can. More on what to include is on the Contact page.

Pages kept out of search

Some pages are readable and linked but ask search engines not to index them: drink pages whose text is still mostly shared template rather than written for that drink, short equipment pages, comparison pages, articles that the site's own quality check holds back, and personal pages such as your account. They come back into the index one by one as they are rewritten. The vendor directory is also kept out of search for now, because its listings are written by sellers, not by us.

Review dates

The Reviewed date under a title is the date the page was last reviewed for accuracy, and it is updated when a page is re-reviewed. It is not changed for a typo fix or a layout change. There is no fixed review calendar: a page is revisited when a reader reports a problem, when a source it relies on changes, or when it is rewritten. Prices and availability on gear pages are set by the retailer and may be out of date, so check the retailer before buying.
