Hydration and Caffeinated Drinks: Separating Myth From Routine
The belief that coffee and tea dehydrate you is one of the most persistent pieces of nutrition folklore, and the evidence against it is unusually clear.
Where the myth came from
Caffeine has a mild diuretic effect — it increases urine production. That much is true, and it is the observation the myth was built on.
What the folklore missed is the fluid arriving with it. A cup of coffee is mostly water. The modest increase in urine output does not exceed the volume consumed, so the net effect is positive hydration.
What the research shows
Studies comparing coffee with water in habitual drinkers have found no significant difference in hydration markers across a range of measures. Reviews of caffeine and fluid balance reach the same conclusion at moderate intakes.
Tolerance also matters: the diuretic effect diminishes with regular consumption. Someone who drinks coffee daily experiences less of it than someone who has abstained for a week.
The practical upshot is that authorities including EFSA and the NHS count caffeinated drinks toward daily fluid intake, because that is what the evidence supports.
Where a genuine caveat exists
Very high single doses, in the region of 500 mg or more in one sitting — particularly in someone unaccustomed to caffeine — can produce a more pronounced diuretic response.
During prolonged exertion in heat, fluid and electrolyte needs are different, and plain water or an electrolyte drink is more appropriate than relying on coffee.
Alcohol genuinely does impair hydration through a different mechanism, and is often lumped in with caffeine incorrectly.
What actually matters for hydration
Total fluid across the day, from all sources including food. Soup, fruit and vegetables contribute meaningfully.
Thirst is a reasonable guide for most healthy adults. Urine colour is a rough and imperfect indicator; pale straw is usually fine, though vitamins and some medications alter it independently of hydration.
The takeaway
If you enjoy several cups of tea or coffee a day, they are contributing to your fluid intake rather than working against it. You do not need to drink an additional glass of water to compensate for each one.
If you have a kidney condition, heart failure, or have been given specific fluid instructions, follow those instead. General guidance is for generally healthy adults, and fluid management is one of the areas where individual medical advice genuinely overrides it.
