Spearmint Digestion

Caffeine-free

Spearmint is often treated as a milder peppermint. It is chemically different, and those differences change what it suits.

Carvone, not menthol

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is dominated by carvone rather than menthol.

Carvone produces a sweeter, rounder, warmer mint character without the sharp cooling of menthol. That is why spearmint tastes gentler rather than simply weaker.

The practical consequence: spearmint does not produce the strong cooling sensation, and it does not relax the lower oesophageal sphincter to the same degree.

Why that matters for reflux

Peppermint is widely recommended for digestion and is specifically unsuitable for people with reflux, because menthol relaxes the sphincter that keeps stomach contents down.

Spearmint is the sensible alternative in that situation — mint character, less risk of aggravating reflux. This is one of the more genuinely useful distinctions in herbal tea.

Traditional use for nausea

Spearmint has long traditional use for nausea and mild digestive upset. The evidence base is limited but the tolerability is good, and it is a low-risk thing to try.

It is worth noting that ginger has considerably better evidence for nausea specifically, including in pregnancy and post-operatively.

The hormonal research

Spearmint has been studied in small trials for anti-androgenic effects, principally in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome and hirsutism. Some studies report reductions in free testosterone.

The trials are small and the findings preliminary. This is not established treatment, and anyone considering spearmint tea for that purpose should discuss it with a clinician rather than self-managing — particularly since PCOS benefits from proper diagnosis and management.

Moroccan mint

Spearmint, not peppermint, is the mint used in Moroccan tea. Peppermint would dominate the gunpowder green base and turn the drink medicinal.

If you are making Moroccan mint tea, using peppermint is the most common error and the results are noticeably worse.

Brewing

Boiling water, five minutes, covered to retain the aromatics.

Fresh spearmint is markedly better than dried and easy to grow — it is vigorous to the point of being invasive, so container growing is advisable.

Use a generous handful of fresh leaves, bruised gently rather than torn.

Caffeine-free

Naturally caffeine-free and suitable in the evening, for children, and generally well tolerated.

Common questions

How much caffeine is in Spearmint Digestion?

Spearmint Digestion is prepared without caffeine. That does not make it inert — botanical material remains pharmacologically active and can interact with medication.

Why does my spearmint digestion taste bitter?

Bitterness almost always indicates over-extraction. Shorten the contact time, lower the water temperature slightly, or use a coarser grind or less leaf — changing one variable at a time so you can tell which was responsible.

How should I store it?

Airtight, opaque, cool and dry, away from strongly aromatic foods. Buy quantities you will finish while fresh; freshness affects the cup more than most technique adjustments.
