Chemex Classic 8-Cup Coffeemaker

One piece of borosilicate glass with a wooden collar, designed in 1941 and in the permanent collection at MoMA. Its bonded filters are noticeably thicker than standard cone papers, which slows the brew and produces the cleanest, lightest-bodied cup of any common method.

Who it suits

  • filter coffee where you want to control the pour and the timing rather than press a button
  • anyone who enjoys a hands-on morning routine

Who should skip it

  • anyone who wants coffee waiting when they get downstairs, because this is a hands-on method
  • large batches for a crowd, where a batch brewer is the simpler answer

The thing worth knowing

The filter changes the cup as much as the brewer does. Paper holds back the coffee oils and fine particles that a metal mesh lets through, so paper gives a cleaner cup and mesh a heavier one.

What we have not done

We have not independently tested this product. The description above is compiled from the manufacturer’s published specification and from what the category demands, and it is written to tell you who the equipment suits rather than to sell it. Where we have no first-hand experience, we say so rather than inventing a star rating.
