- anyone still using pre-ground coffee, where the upgrade is larger than any other single change
- a first or second grinder, where consistency matters more than the last few percent
Who should skip it
- anyone who only drinks instant or pods, where a grinder has nothing to do
- espresso, unless the maker says it grinds fine enough for it
The thing worth knowing
Burr geometry and the consistency of the steps matter more than motor wattage. Check that the finest setting suits your method before you buy: many grinders are set up for filter coffee and stop short of espresso.
