Bodum Chambord French Press

Borosilicate carafe in a stainless frame with a three-part mesh plunger. Full immersion and a metal filter, so the coffee oils stay in the cup — heavier body than paper, and the diterpenes that raise LDL cholesterol come through with them.

What it does

  • Borosilicate glass carafe
  • Three-part steel mesh
  • Full immersion, heavy body
  • Unfiltered — see our cafestol guide

Who it suits

  • a full-bodied cup from simple equipment
  • anyone happy with a coarse grind and about four minutes of steeping

Who should skip it

  • anyone who wants a clean, sediment-free cup, because a metal mesh lets fine particles through
  • a pot that sits on the grounds: once brewed, pour it all out or the coffee keeps extracting

The thing worth knowing

Pour the coffee off the grounds as soon as the timer ends, because left in the press it keeps extracting and turns bitter. A coarse, even grind keeps the cup from going muddy.

What we have not done

We have not independently tested this product. The description above is compiled from the manufacturer’s published specification and from what the category demands, and it is written to tell you who the equipment suits rather than to sell it. Where we have no first-hand experience, we say so rather than inventing a star rating.
