Origin & Story
Guranse takes its name from gurans, the Nepali word for rhododendron, and the rhododendron, called lali gurans in Nepali, is Nepal's national flower. The estate lies near Hile, in Dhankuta district in the east of the country, and its slopes climb from about 1,000 meters to roughly 2,000 meters.
It is a family-owned estate of about 93 hectares that dates from the 1980s, with a workforce that is more than 95% women. It holds organic certification from IMO as well as JAS and ISO 22000, and it makes black, green, white and oolong teas, which it exports to Germany, the United States, Canada, Japan, France and other countries.
Nepal's orthodox teas are grown in the eastern hills at 3,000 to 7,000 feet, and Dhankuta is one of the five districts declared tea zones in 1982. Sellers describe the Guranse orthodox black tea as soft and almost oolong-like, a copper-colored cup with rich muscatel, caramel sweetness and notes of citrus. Across Nepali black teas, sellers often report honeyed depth with stone fruit and floral undertones.
