Where it sits
That is 110 mg in one serving (10 oz (300 ml), one shot), a concentration of 36.7 mg per 100 ml. The scale above ranks whole servings, and servings differ in size, so a larger drink can sit further right while being weaker cup for cup.

What you need
- Chai concentrate (makes 4): 320 g water, 12 g strong black tea, 2 cinnamon sticks, 6 green cardamom pods (cracked), 4 cloves, 4 black peppercorns, 10 g sliced fresh ginger, 40 g brown sugar
- 60 g chai concentrate
- 30 g espresso (one shot, from about 9 g of coffee)
- 180 g milk
Required gear
- Small saucepan
- Fine sieve
- Espresso machine or moka pot
- Milk steamer or frother
- Scale
Step-by-step protocol
- 0:00For the concentrate, simmer the cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, peppercorns and ginger in 320 g water for 5 minutes, lid on.
- 5:00Take the pan off the heat, add 12 g black tea and steep for 4 minutes. Longer turns it bitter rather than stronger.
- 9:00Strain, pressing the leaves lightly, and stir in 40 g brown sugar while it is hot. You get about 240 g, enough for four drinks.
- 10:00Warm 60 g of concentrate in the cup and pull one shot of espresso into it.
- 10:30Steam 180 g milk to 60-65°C and pour it in. Dust with cinnamon if you like.
Troubleshooting
What it may be good for
The caffeine count
About 110 mg as written: roughly 63 mg from one shot of espresso and 40-50 mg from the tea in a quarter of the concentrate. A two-shot "filthy" chai is closer to 175 mg.
Estimates; caffeine varies with the tea, the coffee and the dose.
Sweetness is yours to set
Café chai concentrates are often heavily sweetened. Making your own lets you start with 10 g of sugar per drink and add more only if you want it.
What to watch out for
- Contains caffeine from both tea and coffee, which adds up faster than either alone. If you are pregnant, nursing, sensitive to caffeine or have been told to limit it, count both.
- Contains dairy unless made with a plant milk.
A dirty chai is a chai latte with a shot of espresso added, so the cup carries black tea, warm spice and coffee at once. The espresso darkens the colour and adds a roasted bitterness that keeps the sweet, milky chai from tasting like dessert. Made well, neither the coffee nor the spice wins.
Origin & Story
Where the name comes from
"Dirty" is café shorthand for adding espresso to a drink that does not normally have it, because the coffee muddies the colour. A dirty chai is the best-known example, and the same logic gives the dirty matcha. Two shots are sometimes sold as a "filthy" chai, and some menus call it a java chai or red-eye chai.
Who made the first one is not known. The story repeated most often is that a traveller in England in the 1990s ordered a chai latte and a barista added espresso by mistake. We found it told many times and documented nowhere, so treat it as café folklore. What is certain is that the drink spread with the chai latte itself, on Western café menus in the 1990s and 2000s, and is now a standard order.
Chai latte is not masala chai
Indian masala chai is black tea simmered with milk, sugar and whole spices in one pot. A café chai latte is built differently: a sweet, spiced tea concentrate is mixed with steamed milk, the way a latte is built on espresso. The concentrate is what makes the dirty version possible, because the espresso goes in as a separate shot rather than being boiled with the tea. If you want the pot-simmered original, see our masala chai page.
Why tea and coffee work together
Strong black tea and espresso are both bitter and roasted, but in different ways. Tea brings astringency (the drying feel of tannins) and malt; espresso brings roast bitterness and body. Milk softens both, and the spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, clove, black pepper) bridge them. The risk is balance. A weak chai concentrate disappears under a double shot, and a heavily sweetened one makes the coffee taste harsh by contrast. One shot to a well-spiced concentrate is the usual starting point.
Making it at home
The concentrate is the work, and it keeps. Simmer the whole spices in water first, then steep the tea off the heat so it does not stew bitter, strain it and sweeten it while hot. Brown sugar or honey suits the spice better than white sugar. A batch makes four drinks and keeps for about five days in the fridge. Assam or another strong, malty black tea stands up to milk and coffee better than a delicate one.
Variations
Iced, it is built in a glass over ice with cold milk and the shot poured last, so it layers. Oat milk is the most common swap and suits the spice. Decaf espresso makes an evening version, though the tea still carries caffeine.

How much caffeine is in Dirty Chai Latte?
One serving, 10 oz (300 ml), one shot, contains approximately 110 mg of caffeine.
What temperature should I use for Dirty Chai Latte?
Brew the base at 95°C (203°F). Where the milk is heated, 60–65°C is the target; past about 70°C it tastes scalded and loses its sweetness.
How long should Dirty Chai Latte be extracted?
Timing: Spices 5 min simmer, tea 4 min off the heat. Method: Chai concentrate, espresso and steamed milk. Ratio: 60 g chai concentrate + 30 g espresso + 180 g steamed milk. Grind or leaf format: Strong black tea leaf (Assam CTC works well); fine espresso grind.
Why does my Dirty Chai Latte taste bitter?
In a milk drink, bitterness comes from the base (espresso pulled too long or tea steeped too long) or from scorched milk. Brew the base to the stated proportion, and if the milk is heated, stop at 60–65°C.
Why is it called a dirty chai?
"Dirty" is café shorthand for adding espresso to a drink that normally has none, because the coffee darkens, or muddies, the colour. A dirty matcha follows the same naming. Two shots are sometimes called a "filthy" chai.
How many shots of espresso go in a dirty chai?
One, usually. A single shot lets the spice and tea come through; a double makes it taste mostly of coffee unless the chai concentrate is strong.
Is a dirty chai stronger than coffee?
It has about the caffeine of a strong cup of coffee: roughly 110 mg with one shot, because the black tea adds its own 40-50 mg to the 63 mg in the espresso.
What is the difference between a chai latte and masala chai?
Masala chai is simmered in one pot with milk, tea, sugar and spice. A chai latte is a sweetened spiced tea concentrate mixed with steamed milk, built like a latte, which is what lets a café add a separate shot of espresso.
Who should avoid Dirty Chai Latte?
Contains caffeine from both tea and coffee, which adds up faster than either alone. If you are pregnant, nursing, sensitive to caffeine or have been told to limit it, count both. Contains dairy unless made with a plant milk. This information is educational and is not medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, managing a cardiac or gastrointestinal condition, or taking prescription medication, discuss caffeine and botanical intake with a qualified healthcare professional before making changes.
