Origin & Story
Malawi was the first country in Africa to grow tea commercially. The first plants arrived in 1878, from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, and Jonathan Duncan planted the first trees at the Blantyre Mission. Commercial planting began in 1891, when Henry Brown, a Scottish farmer from Ceylon, planted tea on his plantation.
Satemwa was founded in 1923 by Maclean Kay, a Scottish immigrant and former rubber planter in Malaya, and the Kay family has run it since. The factory was built in 1937. The estate lies near Thyolo in the Shire Highlands, where tea grows at about 900 to 1,200 meters.
Most Malawian tea is CTC, made for teabags, and Satemwa supplies it to major brands. It is also known for a full artisanal range, with white, green, oolong, orthodox black and dark teas, some of which have reached restaurants such as the Fat Duck.
A cool, moist wind called the chiperoni blows from April to August, and the fog and drizzle it brings are said to slow the bushes and concentrate their aromatic oils. To brew it, pour water at about 95°C over 3 g of leaf in a teapot and steep for two and a half to three and a half minutes for a 240 ml cup.
